Silt Control

Silt control products

Erosion from construction sites and civil engineering projects.

Legislation from The EU Water Framework Directive has been incorporated into UK law and will force companies to put in place measures to control silt and protect the water quality of water bodies on, or local to construction sites.

The potential of construction activites to cause increased surface erosion is very high, with surface erosion often being over 150 times more than on-site levels before construction began.

Many construction companies are now turning to the use of sediment and silt control plans to put in place measures to counter soil erosion. These plans often include the use of silt fences/barriers, dewatering bags, sediment mats and drain guards to mitigate the risks.

Silt Fences

The most significant of these methods in practical terms, are silt fences. They have the potential to remove 70 percent of suspended solids from run-off water. The fences are constructed from technical filter fabrics which are entrenched into the soil and staked to provide a perimeter fence.

Ultra dewatering Bags

Wher dirty water has been captivated, the water can be pumped through dewatering bags which will captivate contaminated silts as well as oil.

The are an easy to deploy, use and dispose of method for stopping silt laden waters discharging from site prior to solids removal, which if occurs can carry the high financial penalties for breach of the Pollution Prevention Guidelines PPG6.

The dewatering bags can also be used on influent or effluent pipes to reduce suspended solid loading.

Sediment mats

Sedimats™ are used in waterways during in-stream construction activities (such as pipe laying or dredging) to trap disturbed sediment that may pollute aquatic habitats downstream.

They are a simple, yet effective, biodegradable matting, which are fixed to the stream bed, and do not impede water flow.

Sedimat™ is an effective tool for the protection of streams from sedimentation damage during in stream construction activities such as utility installation, culvert replacements, ditch maintenance, and bridge work.

It is a flat 1.20 x 3.00m pad which is laid singly or in multiples on the streambed immediately downstream of the worksite.

Individual mats are able to trap and remove up to 450kg of sediment each. Because they are laid flat on the streambed, they are not affected by water velocity, nor will they significantly raise water levels.

Ultra drain guards

Ultra drain guards are used to protect storm and site drains from oil contamination and silting up.

The drain guard are placed directly into the drain gully pot where it forms a water permeable barrier. The drain guard incorporates by-pass ports to allow flow of flood water during a storm event.

The oil and sediment model absorbs up to 3.29 litres of oil and up to 18 kg of sediment and solids.
